Belgium - how do I get there?

There are 1001 ways to get to Brussels, Belgium. By plane, you can fly direct from many U.S. Cities. There are no direct flights from Los Angeles. However, you can make reservations will any main U.S. carrier, and they will get you there without problems, usually via New York, Washington DC or Atlanta (there are others too).

Many of you will probably be going to Brussels as part of a larger European tour. The beauty of Belgium is that it is very much located in the center of Europe. As such, you can easily get there from all European cities by plane or train.

Trains: Brussels is a 1:15 hour bullet train ride from Paris, and approximately the same distance from Amsterdam. Trains are also available from London, Germany, and others. For schedules, rates and reservations, check out: www.raileurope.com. Note that certain trains can only be booked three months or less in advance. Book early, as the rates go up as the travel date approaches! Note that the bullet trains (called TGV or Thalys) are more pricey, but much faster and more comfortable. If you are going to travel a lot within Europe, consider Rail Passes which permit you to travel on all non-bullet trains for a certain period of time. If you take the bullet train to Brussels, note that you will arrive at "Bruxelles-Midi," which is not the same than "Bruxelles-Central," where the Grand Place is located. You will have to take another train, taxi, or the subway to get there.

Flights: most European carriers will fly to Belgium from many European cities. See your travel agent or carrier website for more details (note, you can usually book through your U.S. carrier, as it will probably have a partnership with European carriers). For budget flights within Europe, check out Ryanair. They are the "Southwest" of Europe, with dirt cheap airfares, especially if you book early. Note that they often flight to smaller airports outside of the towns, so research your destinations early on their website. They will usually provide (for a fee) shuttles to the center of towns. Ryanair flies to Belgium from many other cities. These flights land in Charleroi, just outside of Brussels. Please e-mail us if you will be arriving there, and we will gladly pick you up!

Transportation within Belgium.

As in most European cities, Belgium in general and Brussels have a good public transportation system that can get you from anywhere to anywhere. As a reminder, shuttle transportation will be provided between the center of Brussels and the wedding locations (church and reception), including return shuttles throughout the evening. To travel longer distances within Belgium, the train network can get you anywhere also. If you prefer the flexibility of renting your own car, you can do that also (most car rental companies have locations throughout the country, including some train stations and the airports).

What is there to do / see in Belgium?

Where to start? Belgium has a deeply rooted history as part of Europe, and it is the host country of the European Parliament and NATO headquarters. The most beautiful part of Brussels, Belgium's capital, is the Grand Place, where we recommend that you stay. We HIGHLY recommend that you obtain a tourist guide for Belgium, as it would be impossible to list everything here. Guides such as Lonely Planet are available at your local bookstore (Barnes & Nobles, etc.) If you have an extra day to spare in Belgium, we recommend that you visit Bruges, one of the most beautiful cities that you will ever see. It is very much like Venice! You can easily get to Bruges by regular train (1 hour ride, 12 euros each way, perhaps less depending on your age or student status) from the Central station in Brussels (by the Grand Place).

Make sure to be in Belgium by August 21 and to leave not before August 23 or even the 24, as the wedding festivities will take most of the day on August 22.
